Saved from residential development in 2003, the 253-acre Franny Reese State Park in Ulster County contains three miles of hiking trails overlooking the Hudson River, Mid-Hudson Bridge and the Walkway Over the Hudson. Along the White Trail lay ruins of Cedar Glen, the estate of Dr. Charles H. Roberts, built in the 1860s.
Mount St. Helens, an active volcano located in the Cascade Range, experienced a major eruption in 1980 that killed 57 people, destroyed homes, roads, railways and wildlife, and left a crater that reduced the summit's elevation by more than 1,300 feet. Although new growth and recovery can be found in the area, remnants of the destruction are still visible.
Named in 2016 by Backpacker as one of the nation’s best state parks, Silver Falls contains the Trail of Ten Falls (7.2 miles) and the 177-foot South Falls. At more than 9,000 acres, it is the largest state park in Oregon.
